Jane Brown (Chairwoman)
I have been a Governor at Barnby Road for over 10 years and chair for just over a year. have lived in Newark for most of my life and went to Barnby Road myself. I know this community well and love that this school is a massive part of the community. I was chair of The Friends group for 12 years and managed to raise a fair bit of money for the children with a great team of people to help. I am a Local Government Officer and have been for over 20 years. I am married with two children, both of whom went to Barnby Road. I swim regularly, read anything I can get my hands on, and am involved with a local Cheerleading squad. I am also a Director of Newark Radio.
Site Manager, yes ... but for many years I was leader of Children's play and Youth services for Kensington and Chelsea in London. Taking a lifestyle change, I moved to Newark 11 years ago and have never looked back. I am a Trustee for Newark and Sherwood Play Support and also for Radio Newark and our own Friends group. I am always 'hands on' and organise play-schemes and play projects across Newark as well as in our own community. I love sport and played Rugby and Cricket for Notts in my younger years. I think I bring this love of sport to the children at school and regularly coach and support them to excel at a wide range of sporting opportunities.
Retired Principal and Chief Executive of Matthew Boulton College of Further and Higher Education. During this period Tony was elected National President of the Association of Principals of Colleges and served on a wide variety of National and Regional Committees. Tony is currently the East Midlands representative on the National Council of the British Association of Friends of Museums, and Chair of Newark & Sherwood Community and Voluntary Services. He also serves as a school governor at primary academy and secondary levels and is a member of the Nottinghamshire CC Schools Forum. An experienced governor and leader, he has successfully contributed across all education phases.
I have been actively involved in the school since my son started in 2006, and have had both my son and daughter move through the school (both have now moved on to secondary education). I was Treasurer of the Friends for 6 years, and love getting involved with organising and working at fundraising events (such as fairs) and community events (BBQs, Picnics). I am still actively involved in The Friends, and was elected Parent Governor in 2013. I am now throwing myself into my roles as a Trustee and Trust Governor. Outside of school I worked for Mars for 17years, running projects across Europe to research and launch new products. I am now lecturing in marketing at the University of Lincoln and Loughborough University, and am consulting and helping companies with their marketing and business strategy. In addition I am involved in charitable activities including links with a Township school in South Africa, have received the ‘Queens Award for voluntary service’ for work with Pera Foundation helping young people develop business skills, and created school programmes combining business & nutrition. I am enjoying using my work knowledge and love for the school to help make an even bigger difference to our children’s school experiences.
THE GOVERNING BODY
Smaller than a typical state school because of Trust Management but able to make quick and efficient decisions as your representatives, 90% of school leadership responsibility and policy making is delegated to them by the Trust Membership. Some trustees choose to remain as governors.
See trustees section.
I have lived in Newark for over 40 years and for 38 of those taught at the Magnus School. After retirement in 2008 I was 'persuaded' to come and help out at Barnby Road. I have been coming regularly, well trying, for a session a week since my retirement. My interest for the school led to me becoming a Trustee and more recently a Governor of the school. I am also a local Councillor and former Mayor.
I am proud to play a small part in the continuing success of this outstanding school.
See trustees section.
I have now been working at the school for a number of years, initially as assistant head teacher then promoted to deputy. I have represented the governing body in my last two posts as a teaching representative. I have lived locally since birth attending schools in Balderton and have a deep understanding of the local community. I enjoy various sporting activities in my spare time and when not playing them will be watching them. My philosophy is to give the children a wide and everlasting experience here at Barnby Road and set them up for a successful future.
I have worked at Barnby Road since 2003 and have taught all year groups from year 1 - year 6. I have held various responsibilities during this time but am currently Lower Key Stage 2 Manager and Initial Teacher Training Manager (ITT), developing links with universities and teaching institutions. I enjoy being part of a thriving community and being involved in many of the extra-curricular opportunities that Barnby provides for the children. I have three children, all of whom were born in Lincoln and raised in Newark after we moved here from London in 2002; two of them have been educated here at Barnby Road.
See trustees section.
I have lived in Newark town for 25 yrs; taking part in the community in a number of ways, including being a magistrate for the past 23 years at Newark until moving to Nottingham when the court was closed. For a number of years I have been an Independent lay member on the local authority standards committee. I was also a governor at the Grove school.
In addition to this I am a member of the East Midlands TYA cancer expert CNCG and ambassador for University of Nottingham and member of uon research centre management board. I enjoy living in our town and would like to hope I play a part in shaping its future. Also my son was a pupil at Barnby Road when it was transitioning to the new build so I have experienced what the school can offer to both parents and students.
Having been educated in the local schools before gaining a BA Management Degree and a Counselling Diploma, I have lived in Newark for most of my life and I am therefore aware of the diverse community and many of its needs and issues. Currently a full-time mum I have had a varied career which has encompassed Counselling, FE teaching, management of a Salvation Army Hostel which provided training and life skills for resettlement of young people, and more recently as a Coordinator/Manager of a Charity which provided therapeutic services for abuse survivors. These jobs encompassed a wide range of skills including management of staff and finances as well as providing empowerment to others to assist them in reaching their full potential. This varied background has enhanced a range of skills that I can bring to the board of governors whilst also enabling me to be approachable to parents and teachers alike promoting clear channels of communication.
I was educated in Southwell where I lived before attending university in Colchester to study Language and Linguistics. I moved back to live in Newark over 10 years ago and have worked in Newark or the east midlands region since then. I am married and have 2 children at the school, my youngest has just started nursery and my eldest is in year 1.
Outside of family, I work as a business management specialist, specialising in governance, safety and quality management. I have worked with local NHS organisation over a number of years, completing my MA in Healthcare Risk Management. I have also worked extensively in the industrial utilities sector and construction, looking after quality, safety and environmental management. I also work with smaller organisations locally to achieve or maintain standards and accreditations to help their business. I need to get to know the workings of my organisations quickly in order to help them effectively, and I hope to bring these audit and examination skills to the role of Parent Governor at the School.
