In the second round of qualifiers we went on to take on the Sherwood teams as part of the Newark and Sherwood competition of 56 schools. This brings in Ravenshead , Southwell and the Newark Town champions.
I a fiercely tight competition we put in some superb performances despite one or two slip ups in in running events to amass a fantastic 97 points to put ourselves into the County finals at Trent University. On Saturday 3 children from Barnby Road represented Newark and Sherwood District at the Nottinghamshire Schools X -Country Championships.
They ran superbly on a very demanding course and were a credit to Newark and our school. The course was twice as far as they are used to running in local competitions. The results were great:
Girls: 70 entrants- Ebony Smith 6th and Newark and Sherwood's first girl home. Fantastic!
Boys 75 entrants- Gabriel Jenkins 18th and Oliver Clarke 30th. Gabriel was the first Newark and Sherwood boy home and Oliver the third Newark and Sherwood boy home.
We are massively proud of all three!
As head teacher I thoroughly approve of children having meals cooked on site and I know that this initiative will save families about £400 per child a year and should prove a big saving for many families. This policy comes into force on September 2014.
Like many schools in the country we are busy working out the logistics of feeding a 75% increase in hot meals and will be bidding for extra ovens, freezers and kitchen equipment and negotiating new contracts with our caterer.
Our meals have been steadily increasing in take up since Louise, then Debbie became our cooks and we are providing good ,balanced healthy meals at a great cost.
The DFE found that the very large majority of primary parents took up the offer and there was a significant increase in older children then joining their younger siblings in having a dinner.
We will continue to plan our way through this initiative and will update parents as we go along.
