What a visit! The year five media group were guests of Joanna Parlby the owner of the Advertiser at The Morton Press Printing Company in Horncastle. We had an executive tour of the whole factory ,past the 10 tonne ink tanks into the amazing factory floor. They print hundreds of newspapers a week for countries as far as China and Mauritius. We watched as our "Barnby Blast" was transferred from computer to the print plates ,then to the massive mill. We had to wait while they set up our Newspaper and prepared the huge presses and then watched as our copies suddenly came flying out of the presses on a huge conveyor of clips holding each one at over 30 miles an hour! From the start of our press run to the stacked newspapers all tied up and ready to go on the vans was about three minutes!
The lucky children have experienced every single aspect of journalism in their club, from reporting, photographing ,interviewing ,writing, editing to the mill and the final print run. We even sold advertising space! Everyone in Newark will get a free "Barnby Blast" in their Advertiser tomorrow and we will begin our selling extravaganza!
What an experience! The children are: Louis ,Eve, Sophie, William, Olivia, Emilie, Chantelle, Matthew and Rhys !
The Barnby Road chess teams competed in the spring term round of the Newark District School's chess league which took place at John Blow School, Collingham last night.
As in the previous round we were able to enter four very strong teams. Teams from 8 different schools took part, involving 22 teams in total. This event is an opportunity to meet people from schools we do not usually come across such as Kneesall, Flintham and Sutton on Trent and for different children to represent Barnby Road.
All the teams performed well; special mention should go to the 'D' team (made up entirely of year 5 grandmasters of the future: Louis Ketley, Thomas Linford, Josh Ridyard & Lucy Finch) who are currently our top-performing team. They sit 4th in the overall table, 1/2 point behind 3rd place.
Special mentions also to individuals who won a medal for winning all 3 of their matches on the evening: Arjun Prakash, Jack Hatfield, Thomas Linford and Josh Ridyard. Well done boys.
The final round will take place in the summer term.

Dear Parents, Carers and Grandparents,
I wish to draw your attention to the wonderful, (no!) ‘Perfect’ season of our hardworking girl netballers and their coaching team this year. I have run sports associations for most of my career and never witnessed a phenomenon such as this. Netball is one of the NDPSSA’S biggest competitions with fifteen schools competing throughout the year for three Newark titles. Look at this:

Never seen this before in any school sport, probably never again. No stars, no six footers, just a fabulous squad and team whose netball is fluid, everybody running off everyone else, to receive and pass from end to end. Their net opportunities against goals scored % compares favourably to the statistics of any adult national league team.
The Team and coaches are:
Abbie Mofoot Libby Johnson Ebony Smith Millie Warren Mia Lloyd
Lylah Hall Rosie Pitchford Laura Kelly Mollie Hill Sheena Kelly Sarah Gore
Out there all year training hard every Tuesday night, taking nothing for granted and playing in a friendly, sporting manner. What an amazing year and thank you to you all. The school and I hope the community too will join with me in saying how immensely proud we are of you. A truly amazing season for a great group of girls.
This Saturday morning we took our two netball teams to the Spring NDPSSA tournament. Fourteen schools and two B teams were represented from Newark. The last minute girls B team were standing in for Lovers Lane who had dropped out on Friday evening. The B team managed two draws and a win and just failed to qualify for the group stages but what a performance from a "Scratch " side lead by Rosie!
The A team were at their best scoring over 30 goals without reply in their six qualifying matches! They then beat a good John Hunt side 7-0 in the quarter final, Winthorpe 5-0 in their Semi .
The final was against an unbeaten Highfields side who were on top of their form. It was the toughest game of our morning and Highfields centres were on good form disrupting our quick moving game. Half time saw us taking a 2-0 lead before our final rotation. The second half was tight but we managed one more goal. Highfields then came back at us and scored the first goal against us in the tournament, they threatened to go to 2-3 but for some great defending. It proved to be the one and only goal conceded and we went on to clinch the Spring tournament 3-1 to go with our win in the Autumn tournament. The girls completing their 31st game without defeat in what could prove the perfect season. They have five more games this week to clinch the Full league title. Their play was exhibition stuff and the fluency coached into them a fantastic credit to the three school coaches. Great Job girls: Ebony, Mia, Abbie, Mollie, Lyla, Millie, Libby. WHAT A TEAM!
APOLOGIES!

If you go to your child's class pages you can view next year's Cross curricular topic overviews which are adjusted and modified to meet the Governments new National Curriculum in 2014. Our new format has been adopted by all year groups so that parents can get a great generic overview. These topics are largely History, Science or Geography based. Separate Numeracy ,Literacy, RE,PE coverage will follow as we prepare to meet the demands of the new national Curriculum. Staff are working hard and long hours to furnish the children with the best opportunities within and without the new national curriculum. Mrs Linford lead a full INSET day to launch our new Maths national curriculum last month and our staff meetings are currently all about maths. Next term the staff move on to the really big one "Literacy". By July 2014 we will have planning in all our new curriculum planning areas "teacher ready" . Our new MFL to replace Spanish will be French!
NEVER BUSIER, GETTING READY FOR YOUR CHILDREN !
