‘Where everyone is able to achieve their best’

Spring Term

Police, camera, action!

This half term we have been exploring and learning about our 'local heroes'. The children have learnt about many different roles such as: shop workers, vets, teachers, post people and many more. We were so lucky to have some very exciting visitors come to our school, police officers! The police officers came to talk about their job and what they do in an emergency. We had a look at the equipment and learned a lot about how they were used to keep us and other people safe. The children had lots of different questions to ask and we found out lots of interesting facts. We were even lucky enough to try on their uniform and have a look inside the police car.

Following on from our visit from the police officers, our very own crime happened in reception. 'The case of the missing cakes'. Some cakes had been left for the adults to enjoy with their lunch. Unfortunately, when we went to fetch the cakes they were missing! The adults and children were met with the following scene (see pictures attached). We looked at the evidence left behind and used the skills we had learnt from the police officers to investigate this crime. The children questioned Mr. Chamberlain and Miss. Woolridge but decided they could be released. Mr. Chamberlain then spotted something on our CCTV, Burglar Bill in action!!

Chinese New Year

Towards the end of term we have enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year. We have learnt how people prepare for the celebration and why it is celebrated. We have tried some special Chinese Food and the children thought it was rather scrummy! The children thoroughly enjoyed learning how to Dragon Dance. Especially when we performed this all the way around the school with musical instruments. The children have also learnt 10 words in Chinese. I wonder if they can tell you any of these at home? The children have blown us away with their creative skills this week. They have made lanterns, fans, drums and banners. The children have also learnt how to write their names and some numbers in Chinese!

Please take a look at our Dragon Dancing pictures. We had a blast!

Our school trip to Brackenhurst

The Reception children have been on a trip (on the minibuses!) to Brackenhurst. We all had an amazing day and really enjoyed being outdoors and exploring nature. The children had great fun re-enacting the stories of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. We did lots of activities relating to those stories including: walking over the troll’s bridge, making clay faces and planting magic beans. The children were fantastic and were told they were a credit to Barnby Road!

Fairy Tale Day

This half term the children have been learning all about Fairytales. We have been looking at similar patterns within the stories and drawing and creating story maps to re tell the story. The celebrate our learning the children were invited to attend a 'Fairy tale day ball'. The created wands and crowns, made castles from Lego and bricks and re-enacted some Fairy tale stories with the help from books and puppets. We also got to make some Gingerbread men and tasted them too. They were really scummy. The children also attended a ball and a parade where they danced and shared their outfits.

Bikeability

The children had 2 training sessions with the Bikeability team. John and Greg worked with us to help us gain confidence on the balance bikes. During the first session the children learned about the parts of a bike. They learned how to steer, control and brake whilst riding. They began by pushing along and lifting their feet for 1 to 2 seconds then increasing the time so eventually they could glide along. Once they had gained confidence the children had fun playing games to practice their skills. We played ‘traffic lights’, ‘what’s the time Mr Wolf’ and the ‘destination’ game. Take a look at how we got on.
