• Summer fair

  What a super day was had by all on Saturday at the summer fair! We had a great day and raised lots of money to support the school. At first count it looks like being a record breaking year with over £3000 raised and match funding for £1000 hopefully coming from Barclays. Can I say a big thank you to everyone who supported this event and made it such a success. It was great to see past and present pupils at the event with their families and friends.

• KS2 Music concert

  Congratulations to the choir and orchestra who were amazing at the KS2 music concert on Friday evening. They both performed brilliantly and the children were very well behaved during the concert. Well done to all involved.

• Super sports days

  It was great to see so many smiling faces at the Nursery, Foundation 2 and Key Stage 1 sports days last week. Well done to all that were involved. It is meant to be the Key Stage 2 sports day today so fingers crossed the weather improves as the morning progresses.

• Chess Champs!

  Barnby hosted the summer round of the Newark Primary Schools' chess tournament last night. Four teams from the school competed, against teams from Sutton on Trent, Highfields, Holy Trinity and John Blow (Collingham).

  The standard of chess was excellent, all schools bringing teams representing a variety of different year groups. Going into the final round Barnby 'A' were 1 point behind Sutton on Trent but after a tense afternoon we emerged as overall champions winning by half a point, or the equivalent of one draw!

  Barnby 'B' put in the performance of the day coming from further down the field to claim 3rd spot overall, pipping Barnby 'D' at the final moment.

  Well done to all teams involved. The future of chess is looking bright, with two of our teams being made up of year 5 children.

• Rounders runners up

  After the disappointment of being beaten in the rugby final on the previous evening some of the children present in both teams had an immediate chance to make up for it at the district rounders on Wednesday. We took two teams and they both progressed through the group stages into the knockout rounds. Unfortunately in the quarter finals we were drawn against each other and after a very tight game the A team just came out on top. We made it through the semi finals with a strong performance against Halam and then came up against a motivated Walesby team who we had beaten at the rugby the previous night. After a very tight match that flowed both ways we eventually went down to a 5.5 - 5 defeat. The children were all super during the day and represented the school brilliantly.

• Tag Rugby Runners up

  Congratulations to the Tag rugby team who played excellently on Tuesday night at the district finals. They played extremely well within the group stages and topped a very demanding group. They then went on to play Bleasby in the final and after a determined effort unfortunately were well beaten by a very strong side. The children had a great evening and it was a pleasure to accompany them to the event.

• Welcome back

  Just a quick message to welcome everyone back after half term for what is usually our busiest time of year. There will be lots happening over the next few weeks to keep the staff and children very busy.
